For Non-university Students
Finnish courses – to whom?
Our Finnish courses are aimed at registered international students, visiting students and faculty members of the University of Jyväskylä. We also welcome other participants if there is room in the groups. Note, that at university level the ability to study independently is required. The courses are suitable for people who are currently studying or have completed studies at high school level. On the basic courses (My Finnish and Everyday Finnish) also good command of English is an advantage.
Please note that participating in a Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication course does not entitle you to a study place at the University of Jyväskylä. If you would like to apply to be a full-time university student, you can learn more from the University's International Office.
Course tray
Our Finnish courses range from intensive survival courses to advanced special courses. In addition to basic and advanced courses (XSUX1001–XSUX1005), we also offer shorter complementary courses focusing on specific language skills such as speaking or text comprehension.
Courses are mainly arranged during the academic year. In the autumn term the courses start in September and end in December. In the spring, the courses run from January to April or May. In August, we only offer a four week intensive My Finnish course.
Tailor-made courses for private students and small groups can be arranged by agreement.

Important to remember when attending a course
Classes start always quarter past full hour: e.g. a course starting at 2 p.m., actually starts at 14.15. Each lesson lasts for 45 minutes, so a regular 2 x 45 minutes class starting at 14.15 ends at 15.45.
Evaluation
Evaluation is based on class participation, homework, project work and a final examination which covers all the language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammatical structures, and vocabulary). In the final examination you have to pass in all the subskills to get a final grade.
The grades used in the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication are 1–5 (1=pass, 2= satisfactory, 3=good, 4= very good, 5=excellent). If you fail in the final examination, you have a right to re-take it. You don’t have to take the whole exam over again, just the subskills you failed in. In order to get through the examination you have to get 50 % of the maximum points.
Let your teacher know, if you want to have a certificate after completing the course.
