JYU.INTEGRA

JYU.INTEGRA training is meant for immigrants who have completed or are qualified for higher education and aim to finish their interrupted degree studies or complement a prior degree in compliance with Finnish qualification requirements. JYU.INTEGRA training promotes the students’ integration into the Finnish academic world and university learning culture.

Future trainings

The next Integra training starts 15.1.2024. The application period is already over. We will update information about the 2025 training in September 2024.

For students

The aim of the INTEGRA language training is to integrate language studies with studies in the participants’ own disciplines. In this way, the training will support the participants in learning the Finnish language, academic skills (in both Finnish and English) and the contents of their own discipline in Finnish. At the same time, the training promotes the students’ integration into the Finnish academic world and university learning culture.

INTEGRA training does not lead to a university degree, and the students cannot automatically continue in degree studies at the university or at another higher education institutions after the training. However, JYU.INTEGRA training and the guidance received during it will help students to continue in the degree studies they apply for afterwards.

JYU.Integra training promotes the students’ integration into the Finnish academic world and university learning culture.

JYU.INTEGRA training

INTEGRA is a language training programme that also includes university studies in the participants’ own disciplines. The scope of the training is 45 ECTS credits:

24 ECTS credits Finnish language skills
6 ECTS credits English language skills
5–10 ECTS credits of studies in each student’s own discipline
5 ECTS credits individual guidance

At the beginning of the training, the student and the counsellor of the SIMHE project (Supporting Immigrants in Higher Education in Finland) collaboratively create a personal study plan for the student. The participant’s prior education, current educational needs as well as Finnish, English and other language skills are mapped in the plan.

The recent Pre.INTEGRA training started in autumn 2023.

Pre.INTEGRA training

Pre.INTEGRA training is a three-month training programme of elementary level Finnish aimed for Ukrainians and Ukrainian immigrants with higher education, or those who are eligible for higher education, and who have a residence permit under temporary protection. During the training, students develop their Finnish language skills and academic study skills in Finnish.

In autumn 2023, we are piloting the PRE.INTEGRA training, which is funded as part of the discretionary funding from the State Funding for Universities (item 29.40.50.3) of the Ministry of Education and Culture for enhanced university SIMHE support and counselling services for Ukrainian refugees in particular.

Research at the INTEGRA project

JYU.INTEGRA training is and has been developed on a research basis. The aim of this training model is to promote the integration of people with an immigrant background into society, as well as promote multilingual skills and the development of university pedagogy. At the same time, the good practices developed in the training are shared with other higher education institutions.

INTEGRA executors at JYU and partners

The JYU.INTEGRA training, language studies and related research and development work is carried out by the University of Jyväskylä's Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication Movi

The content of the training is provided by the Open University of the University of Jyväskylä and the guidance is provided by the SIMHE (Supporting Immigrants in Higher Education) guidance service of the University of Jyväskylä Education Services.

Multidirectional and multidisciplinary cooperation plays an important role. Co-operation is done with different actors, such as TE services, integration services, the International Jyväskylä Centre of Excellence and the Finnish National Board of Education.

In particular, there is cooperation with universities and universities of applied sciences in Finland that organise and develop education and training for people with a higher education background who are qualified for higher education.

The development work also makes use of the international networks of the University of Jyväskylä and in particular the partner universities of the Forthem Alliances, such as Université de Bourgogne, which is one of our partners.
