Principles for the Recognition of Prior Learning of Language and Communication Studies

At the University of Jyväskylä studies completed in a Finnish or foreign university or some other higher education institution or equivalent skills acquired by other means can be recognized and replace studies of corresponding level as specified in the curriculum. The competences must always be verified and assessed. Recognition can be done at any point during the studies for enrolled degree students.

Substitution refers to substituting studies included in the curriculum fully or partly with studies completed elsewhere or with competence demonstrated otherwise than in formal education. Substitution requires similarity of content and that the studies or other competences are at the same EFQ level as the substituted studies.

Inclusion refers to adding studies completed elsewhere or competence proven otherwise than in formal education as part of a degree to, for example, elective studies. The level of the studies or other competence must correspond to the curriculum and the learning outcomes of the degree. The similarity of content with a certain part of the curriculum is not required.

The student is responsible for starting the recognition process and the prerequisite is the equivalence with learning outcomes of the degree or parts of it. The competence to be recognized cannot overlap with courses done and/or competences already recognized in the degree. The student must verify the competence in a way that can be assessed. Recognition may require additional proofs and/or assignments.

The recognition of the language and communication courses depends on the content of the courses, learning outcomes and goals, number of ECTS-credits and the demand level of the course, which are then compared to the JYU course to be recognized through prior learning as follows:

1. Mandatory / Optional language and communication courses

Course of equal level, content and ECTS at another HEI can replace a communication and language course in a degree. Field-specific supplementation can be demanded if the study fields are different. Also ECTS supplementation can be required if the number of ECTS is different.

Courses done at the universities of applied sciences can replace preparatory, elementary and basic courses at Movi. Recognition depends on the content of the courses, learning outcomes and goals, number of ECTS-credits and the demand level of the course, also grade must be 4 or 5 (excellent or good).

Mandatory Finnish course in a JYU international Master’s degree programme can be replaced with an equivalent Finnish courses in a Bachelor’s degree (learning outcomes, level, ECTS) if the course completion is not older than 3 years and/or active use of Finnish. Please consult the teachers regarding recognition with a copy of the degree certificate and necessary background information: tuija.lehtonen@jyu.fi. Students are STRONGLY encouraged instead of replacing a Finnish course to substitute it in their personal study plans with a more advanced Finnish course to ensure the development of Finnish skills.

Courses done at high school or at education institutions leading to eligibility into higher education are not eligible for recognition.

2. Language courses abroad (during JYU student exchange) and international internship

Based on the courses done at a HEI abroad a maximum number of 8 ECTS of mandatory/optional language courses can be recognized if the language of tuition has been the official language of the country (e.g. courses conducted in English in U.K, Ireland USA, Australia, etc.). If the courses are completed in another language than the official language of the country, a maximum number of 4 ECTS of optional language courses can be recognized in the language of tuition. If language courses are completed at the host university, they can be recognized based on the content of the courses, learning outcomes and goals, number of ECTS-credits and the demand level of the course.

Credits can be recognized through international internships, case-by-case. Students must contact the teacher of that language before-hand and negotiate how to report the internship and how to verify, document and reflect on the use of language and the development of language skill during the internship as evidence of competence acquired.

3. Recognition of language and communication skills acquired by other means

JYU degree students can apply for the recognition of prior learning by other means than formal HEI education if the prior learning meets the learning goals.

The skills acquired by other means are compared to the learning goals of the course or module and if deemed equivalent, they can be recognized. Verified documents, essays, exams, portfolios, interviews and other applicable methods and assignments can be used in the verification and assessment of the prior learning.

If student wishes to study language and communication courses required in a degree somewhere else, the equivalence should be checked beforehand at Movi. Open universities and summer universities usually mention the equivalence but courses from other institutions can be accepted only if the information on content and level are sufficient
