Intensive English Courses in August
These pages are meant to help you to become familiar with the English intensive courses offered at the start of the semester to help you brush up on your English skills before the start of your studies.
Intensive Summer Course in Academic English: Targeted at exchange and visiting students whose English language proficiency level is A2-B1 (lower intermediate – intermediate). (Course description below)
Advanced Summer Course in English: Targeted at JYU degree as well as exchange and visiting students whose English language proficiency level is B2-C1 (upper intermediate – advanced). (Course description below).
Before applying for the course, please assess your language skills by using the framework available on website of the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication to see which course you should choose.

Intensive Summer Course in Academic English XENX040
This two-week intensive preparatory course in academic English (40 hours of in-person teaching, 4 ECTS credits) is arranged in August by the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication - Movi. The aim of the course is to prepare students for studying their major through English at the University of Jyväskylä. We will activate, practice and improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English at lower intermediate – intermediate level. We will also discuss intercultural differences in academic conventions and focus on general academic study skills needed in studying here at the University of Jyväskylä. Typical tasks include reading, listening and speaking exercises, finding and evaluating information, writing an essay and leading a class discussion. The course is targeted at exchange and visiting students whose English language proficiency level is A2-B1.

The detailed course schedule can be seen in the Sisu-data System Sisu student tools (jyu.fi) (Teaching > Groups and Teaching times). The course will run as intensive contact teaching 14-25.8.2023 in the mornings.
Proficiency level is A2-B1, lower intermediate – intermediate. Before applying for the course, please assess your language skills in the Erasmus+ Online Linguistic Support system (OLS) (contact your home university Erasmus+ coordinator for more information and access), if you are an Erasmus+ student, or by using the framework available on website of the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication. This course is targeted at students whose English language proficiency level is A2-B1.
How to apply:
- Application deadline: 15 May

- Application process: Applicants will receive information on their admission to the course within a few weeks after the application deadline. The participation on the course must be confirmed by 15 June at the latest.
- Minimum and maximum number of participants: min. 14, max. 20.
NB. It is possible to take both this course and the XSU0026 Survival Finnish for exchange students as the courses do not overlap, but keep in mind that the workload will then be considerable.
Advanced Summer Course in English XENX1001
The Advanced Summer Course in English (40 contact hours, 4 ECTS credits) is arranged in August by the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication - Movi. The aim of the course is to prepare students for studying their major through English at the University of Jyväskylä. We will activate, practice and improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English at upper intermediate – advanced level. We will also discuss intercultural differences in academic conventions. Typical tasks include reading, discussions and evaluating information as well as writing a critical text and presenting and leading a discussion on a field-specific topic following academic conventions. The course is targeted at JYU degree as well as exchange and visiting students whose English language proficiency level is B2-C1 (upper intermediate – advanced).
